[Cameron Offices, Belconnen, Canberra ACT]

  • re-nominated
"demolition of Wings 1 & 2 has commenced and a new application has also been made to the National Capital Authority (NCA) by the developer to amend the Development Control Plan (DCP) governing the site. Should the DCP be amended as proposed, demolition would be allowed for Wings 6-9 in addition to Wings 1 & 2 - leaving only wings 3, 4, and 5, standing which are currently listed on the Commonwealth Heritage list." (RAIA, - ed. Amelia Bogatko)

  • safeguarding
"It is now imperative that the Department of Environment and Heritage move to list this building, regarded as an iconic modernist masterpiece, if the Australian Government is to begin preserving the nation’s important architectural heritage in any meaningful way ...”

“National Heritage Listing of a project of this significance, by such an important and internationally regarded architect, John Andrews, and which we believe meets all of the Government’s listing criteria, must surely be a straight forward decision.” (RAIA National President Carey Lyon,

  • urge to lobby
"A vocal, vigorous debate must be encouraged as to why it is that, as a nation, we archive and treasure our visual, verbal and written cultural heritage and history, but seem oblivious to the effects of decimating the living, breathing built environment record of our nation’s development." (RAIA, - ed. Amelia Bogatko)

  • about Cameron Offices
"Cameron Offices in the Canberra suburb of Belconnen is one of only 10 Australian buildings recognised on the International Union of Architects (UIA) Register of 20th Century Architectural Heritage. Other buildings recognised are: the Sydney Opera House, New Parliament House, the Sydney Myer Music Bowl, Australia Square, the National Gallery of Australia and the High Court, Newman College, ICI House, and the Shine Dome.)

Cameron Offices was designed in the late 1960s by award-winning architect John Andrews, who received the nation’s highest architectural honour, the RAIA Gold Medal in 1980 for his significant body of work, including this complex. His other notable buildings in Australia include the American Express Tower in Sydney and the Darling Harbour Convention Centre. He returned from Canada specifically to undertake the Cameron Offices project, and his presence in this country provided a stimulating influence for Australian architecture." (RAIA, - ed. Amelia Bogatko)
